What are build-ups and posts?
If a crown or a bridge is recommended for a tooth, a lot of times the tooth will need a build up or a post. When a lot of decay is removed from a tooth, the remaining tooth structure may not be strong enough by itself to support a crown. Build-ups (also called “cores”) and posts may be needed when the tooth’s foundation needs more structure.
- A build-up is dental material added to the inner part of a tooth.
- A post is a metal rod inserted into the tooth’s root.
There is always a separate fee for a build-up and a separate fee for a post, in addition to the crown fee.
