Care Following Treatment for Periodontal Disease// Gilbert, AZ

Discomfort: The greatest amount of discomfort after treatment of periodontal disease is in the first six hours after the treatment. You may take Motrin or Advil with a recommended dosage of 800 mg every 3-4 hours. You may use warm salt water rinses to help with healing.

Tooth Sensitivity: Your teeth may be sensitive to temperature. The sensitivity may be noticeable the first several days. The sensitivity should get better as the gum tissue heals.  If the sensitivity persists you can use desensitizing toothpaste. A home fluoride may also be recommended.

Bleeding: Some bleeding may occur during the first few time you brush. The bleeding should decrease after two to three days. Keep up oral hygiene during this time. If the bacterial plaque is not disrupted daily, by flossing and brushing, the disease could come back.

Oral Hygiene:  We can’t control the responses of your immune system so the success of you treatment of periodontal disease depends on the daily mechanical removal of bacteria plaque.  Flossing, brushing and the use of the recommended home care implements are essential to help maintain, heal and prevent the progression of periodontal disease. It is important that you use the home care implements as instructed. Your oral hygiene success is up to you!
