Calculus, or tartar, is hardened plaque that has been left on a tooth for a long time and is now attached to it. Your hygienist has to use special instruments to remove the build-up. After removing tartar and sticky plaque off your teeth, your hygienist will polish your teeth to help remove and plaque or stain that isn’t removed when they are scaling.
