Sometimes referred to as a cap, crowns encircle and enclose the tooth. It fits over your tooth, like a hat on your head, and is cemented or bonded into place. If a tooth is missing as much as 50% or more, or if an entire corner has been broken or chipped, crowns are typically the restoration needed to fix the tooth. When there is not enough tooth structure to encircle and surround a filling, then you need a restoration that will surround and support the tooth. Crowns can be metal, porcelain fused to metal, or all porcelain.
