The Benefits of Flouride
Tooth decay is one of the most common preventable diseases seen in Children.
Children as young as 12 to 18 months can get cavities. Cavities in children’s teeth can cause pain and prevent children from eating, speaking, sleeping and learning.
A very effective method of cavity prevention is the use of Fluoride. Fluoride acts to repair, or remineralize, areas in which acid attacks have already begun. Acid is formed when the bacteria in plaque break down sugars and carbohydrates from the diet. Repeated acid attacks break down the tooth, which causes cavities.
Fluoride is obtained in two forms: topical and systemic. Topical fluorides strengthen teeth already present in the mouth and create a tooth surface that is more resistant to decay. Topical fluorides include toothpastes, mouth rinses and professionally applied fluoride therapies. Systemic fluorides are those that are ingested into the body and become incorporated into forming tooth structures. This most commonly occurs by drinking fluoridated water.
Professionally applied sodium fluoride varnish is appropriate for Children of all ages as young as infants and is the method we most commonly use is our office. Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that is painted on teeth. The fluoride varnish sticks to the teeth until it is brushed away at bedtime; however, the benefits of the fluoride will last for several months. Call Power Ranch Dental Today (480) 988-2282!
