What is Tartar?
Tartar is plaque that has hardened on your teeth. Sometimes your dental hygienist will refer to it as calculus or tartar buildup. Tartar can form at and underneath the gum line. This formation can really irritate gum tissues. Tartar gives plaque more surface area on which it can grow and make a much sticker surface for the bacteria to adhere to. This can lead to more serious conditions, such as gum disease and cavities.
Tartar can threaten the health of your teeth and gums; it can also be a cosmetic problem. Since tarter is more porous, it absorbs stains easily. If you drink a lot of coffee or tea, or if you smoke, it is very important to prevent any tartar build-up.
